Carved Watermelon Basket

In between working on a rather large and lengthy project, I have been spending a little time sculpting my first miniature watermelon basket.  I was always extremely fascinated by these when I was younger, so I figured that it is about time that I try making one.

Below is a picture of my new watermelon basket, complete and fully prepared to be devoured with sliced watermelon cubes within the hollow of the basket.

  3. Oh, I just love it!! Reminds me of my childhood when my Mom made these for special Summer parties. My sister had a summer birthday so she always got one for her party. And my Mom was always hosting showers of one sort or another. Actually, it was my Dad who did the carving. Looks great in miniature!

  4. Hi Bridget! I have such good memories of these melon baskets. My mother-in-law used to make them all the time for social teas and the like and they were always a big hit with the ladies who attended. I tried it once on my own and the basket was not so successful, but the melon still tasted good. These kinds of works were very popular in the 50's and 60's and fruit kabobs were also high on the hostesses list of what to serve at Tupperware parties and bridge games. You have done such a great job with yours in miniature, Very Authentic!
